Your Bundesfreiwilligendienst at Tafel Lübeck

Finished school – now what? How about a job where you actually make a difference?

At Tafel Lübeck, there's no desk waiting for you – there's a van, a team, and loads of good food that's honestly far too good to throw away. As part of our driving team, you're right in the middle of it all: you'll ride along with our volunteers to supermarkets and bakeries, rescue food from the bin, and bring it to the people who really need it. Sometimes that also means carrying boxes up to the fourth floor – tough, sure, but the gratitude in the eyes of the people waiting for you makes up for it easily.

You like to pitch in, have a class B driving licence, and you're not made of sugar? Then you're exactly right for us. We're a team of around 300 volunteers working every week for about 4,000 people in Lübeck – against poverty, against waste, and for a bit more togetherness in our city.

Good to know: The Bundesfreiwilligendienst is a fixed-term service to society. The service period at Tafel Lübeck is 12 months, is supported by the state, and can be done by anyone who has completed school. You'll receive a monthly allowance as well as your own work clothing.

And the best part: Along the way, you'll gain plenty of hands-on experience for your future career and discover where your strengths lie.

Your tasks on the driving team

Food rescue in action

As a driver or co-driver, you'll head out together with our volunteers to supermarkets, discount stores, and bakeries. On site, you'll check the provided, no-longer-sellable goods for edibility, collect them, and load them into our van. You'll then bring the rescued food to our distribution points.

Vehicle care

Your tasks also include loading and unloading our vehicles as well as taking care of them – this includes cleaning the driver's cabs and cargo areas.

Mobile Tafel

A special part of your work is the mobile Tafel: here, you'll deliver pre-packed food boxes directly to people who, due to health or age-related reasons, can't visit our distribution points themselves. This sometimes means carrying boxes up to higher floors – an effort that's more than made up for by people's heartfelt thanks.

Versatile support

Depending on staffing needs, you'll also help distribute food at our distribution points and support our warehouse team.

What you bring with you

  • Class B driving licence
  • physical stamina
  • friendliness and teamwork skills
  • reliability
  • willingness to take on responsibility
